American School of London - 23rd April 2025

We have had excellent post Spring Break Middle and Lower school debating sessions.

On skills we worked on persuasive language and how to tackle public speaking nerves.

For our newsround we looked at tariffs, the nationalisation of British steel,  the War in Ukraine, the passing of Pope Francis, and the all women Blue Origin Space mission.

Our set-piece debates focussed on:

  • Whether the Blue Origin Space mission was just a publicity stunt? or a great event for humanity? We also referenced the role of Katy Perry and the other passengers.

  • Whether junk food and sugary treats should be banned in schools?

  • If Rory Mcllroy's 'never give up on your dreams' comments post Master golf victory are the right words/message for children? or such ideas lead to dashed hopes and false dreams?

  • On the back of Alan Titchmarsh's comments, we also discussed whether the UK market for the avocado was damaging to the environment and whether households should change their habits/shopping to help the environment/climate

  • In our Lower school session we also looked the motion: 'Museums should be free to attend'

In each case the groups divided, with some excellent extended proposition and opposition argumentation.

Our unseen work took in the St George's Day crowning of Charles II in 1661.

Well done all!
