American School of London - 25th September 2024

We started this week doing our usual round up of the news, where we talked about new viruses that are starting to occur post covid, new moons appearing and the recent happenings in the Middle East. As a warm-up activity every member of the class then had to briefly talk about what they enjoyed doing at the weekend. Here, students were encouraged to expand upon their answers, giving good reasoning.

As a group, we then had a great discussion on the topic of whether all animals think. Whilst the majority of students believed they did, there were some interesting points made regarding those animals without brains (such as jellyfish) and if they were therefore “thinking”, or not.

The group was then split into two, where different topics were discussed, focussing on using rebuttals in their arguments. The first debate was on the motion 'Should AI be used to plan holidays' and the secondary one argued 'if we should have car free days enforced in the UK?'. Some fantastic points were made here.

For the final 20 minutes we looked at the use of guns in the USA and whether they should be banned/or restricted. There were some great insights, leading us into a general discussion on the US elections and the key issues that are involved.

Students worked well and it was great to see such lovely discussion in the room.
