American School of London - 29th January 2025

Dr George Gross

As usual, we started this week discussing the news, before going into an interesting digression regarding maternity and paternity rights around the world and how they differ. In our usual warm up exercise, all students had to state which new school rule they would like enforced, giving reasoning, which created a diversity of conversations, many of which were focussed around equality and fairness. Following this, students talked about which new invention they would like to have, before going into our main focus of the week - opening statements.

As a group we discussed what made a strong opening statement before looking at two different debates; the expansion of Heathrow and also the ethics of short haul flights. Students then had to stand up and give an opening statement for an argument, choosing to either support or deny. All were then given individual feedback on where their strengths and weaknesses lay.

The main debate of the day looked at whether artwork should be kept in their country of origin. This was a really fantastic debate with many of the students making really impassioned points and referring to well known works at a variety of museums and galleries.

A super session!
