American School of London (Junior Club) - 4th March 2026

Updated: 2 hours ago

We had some lively warm up discussions about whether it is better to be healthy or wealthy with students putting forward some interesting and philosophical ideas. We moved onto whether you should follow your talents or your dreams. It was wonderful to hear the children’s thoughts about what they would like to do for their careers. Many came to the conclusion that your dreams usually stem from your talents.

We debated driverless cars before having a more formal debate about whether in person learning is better than online. The students spoke confidently and articulated their opinions well.

Competition Highlights

Over the years, The Socratic Club has hosted a number of debating competitions, bringing together students from a range of schools across London, the UK, and abroad. Several of our competitions have taken place in inspiring and historically significant venues, including the Charles Dickens Museum, the Carlton Club, and the Imperial War Museum. These settings provide a memorable backdrop for thoughtful discussion and debate, encouraging students to engage with ideas in places closely connected to Britain’s intellectual and political heritage.
