American School of London (Senior Club) - 4th March 2026

As per custom, we started this week by discussing the recent news which was dominated by what is happening in Iran and the Middle East. Students were keen to discuss why this had started and also looked further back into history at the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

As a warm up question, students were asked if it were better to be wealthy or healthy, with most agreeing that health was a priority, although often wealth aided this to a considerable degree. We then looked at the statement that one should follow your talents and not your dreams. Most in the group strongly disagreed with this and felt is was a question of work ethic, whilst also suggesting that a lot of people tended to enjoy what they were talented at and therefore it was involved in their dream. We also discussed driverless cars, with most saying they would still trust a human driver over that of a machine.

The students were keen to debate a topic they had come up with, which was whether fairy tales should be read to children. Many had some strong opinions on this, discussing topics such as fairy tales implementing stereotypes and encouraging risky behaviour in children. Others felt it was a great way for children to learn about relationships, conflicts and improve their vocabulary.

Very well done all!

Competition Highlights

Over the years, The Socratic Club has hosted a number of debating competitions, bringing together students from a range of schools across London, the UK, and abroad. Several of our competitions have taken place in inspiring and historically significant venues, including the Charles Dickens Museum, the Carlton Club, and the Imperial War Museum. These settings provide a memorable backdrop for thoughtful discussion and debate, encouraging students to engage with ideas in places closely connected to Britain’s intellectual and political heritage.
