We had a wonderful time debating banknotes last week and what should be depicted on the notes. The children all felt that it was a good idea to have British wildlife; an idea mooted with the general public by the Bank of England last year. The children each chose an animal that they would like represented on their banknote, and they had to give a little proposal speech with three reasons for their choice. Our skill of the week was how to raise a 'point of interest' and the children did this quite well with each other's proposals.
We moved onto the world's happiest countries and we discussed what makes them happy as individuals. This was supported with some choice cards that they had to sort into categories. It was an interesting activity and wonderful to see the children discuss their thoughts with each other.
We debated whether extra curricular activities should be graded in the way that core subjects are. Most children felt that they should not, but they had some interesting and conflicting arguments for this. They articulated their ideas well.
