Debating competitions: Kensington Wade vs Queen's Gate (Zoom) & Queen's Gate vs St Philip's (In-Person) - March 2026

This week saw two excellent debating competitions.

We looked at two motions:

  • 'This House believes it is better for a leader to be tough rather than kind' (inspired by Machiavelli's famous line) &

  • 'This House believes we should follow our talents rather than our dreams' (on the back of Reese Witherspoon's recent comments)

From POIs to carefully constructed proposition and opposition arguments, we were hugely impressed with the contributions from each school and the excellent active listening shown.

Very well done all!

Competition Highlights

Over the years, The Socratic Club has hosted a number of debating competitions, bringing together students from a range of schools across London, the UK, and abroad. Several of our competitions have taken place in inspiring and historically significant venues, including the Charles Dickens Museum, the Carlton Club, and the Imperial War Museum. These settings provide a memorable backdrop for thoughtful discussion and debate, encouraging students to engage with ideas in places closely connected to Britain’s intellectual and political heritage.
