Eaton House pupils have brought a fantastic range of news and great enthusiasm to the debating sessions this term.
We have discussed cultural news such as whether there should be a remake of the Harry Potter movie or a new Gruffalo tale as well discussions & debates around environmental and political issues including the Reform party’s latest success at local and mayoral elections.
One of the most impressive debates this term looked at the motion ‘This House believes that animals and the natural world matter more than human beings'. The debate was inspired by David Attenborough turning 99 and releasing his film “The Ocean” which explains how our understanding of the ocean has changed over his lifetime.
In addition to our newsround and set-piece debates we have worked on key debating and public speaking skills from opening to closing statements, to POIs and rhetorical questions. The group really enjoys voting and we have two tellings per motion. It has been great to also explore philosophical questions, such as 'is it better to be right, or better to be kind'.
We have also looked at unseen -'on this day' examples, the theme this week took in the execution in 1536 of Anne Boleyn. Previous examples have included the first vaccination (smallpox) in 1796.
Well done all on such an impressive first half of the term!
