This week saw further excellent sessions with our Debating club at Kensington Wade.
Our skill focus this week looked at Style and Tone and how to deliver a speech in a confident and persuasive way.
Our newsround saw reference to the War in Ukraine, the return of the King to public duties, the ending of the Bute House agreement and resignation of the First Minister in Scotland, along with forthcoming local (and mayoral) elections in the UK.
Our interview style question asked with an emphasis on 'why'?: If you could study abroad, where would you go/choose and why?
This saw, New York, Paris, Shanghai, Tokyo, Rome and Florence all feature. In each case it was super to hear the reasoning, from shared language, new cultures and people, and exposure to more ideas.
We then turned to our debate on the back of legislation in the USA to ban TikTok. The motion: 'This House would ban TikTok'. The group was divided, but overall rejected the motion at the second telling. Great emphasis was put on the need for changes to security, age limits with enforcement and education for better awareness, but the advantages for education, job creation and business development weighed heavily on the voting.
This was a hard fought debate with very good use of stories and evidence to support each argument and an emphasis on the financial implications and practicality of enforcing a ban and what that would mean for the wider tech industry.
Well done all!
