This was an outstanding session of debating, discussion and questions. Very well done to all those in our St Andrew's Debating & Interview club.
We began by focussing on our key skills for the week:
Objectivity and working on beginning a debate with a strong opening statement.
We followed this with an interview style question, 'if you could take up a new subject, what would it be and why?'
Answers included:
Rugby
Logic/Reasoning
Italian
Skiing/Horse riding - a wider variety of sporting options each term
Dance
Baking
Interior Design
Our debates centred on:
Motion/Question (i) Armistice Day / Remembrance Day - 'Should we continue to remember?'
The group felt that it was not just WWI we remembered but also recent conflicts, and the 'service' and 'sacrifice' of those that have fought for our freedoms should be respected and in turn remembered.
Motion/Question (ii) 'This House would continue to work with the USA, following the election of Donald Trump'
Here the group divided, with some less keen to work with the US, whilst the majority seeing it as a vital partner and ally for the UK - with NATO and Trade playing a vital role.
We ended the session with a discussion on the War in Ukraine and whether the West should push for peace now, or work towards a complete victory for Ukraine. The group voted overwhelmingly for peace now, although they were concerned as to any precedent it might make/give to Putin. Financial concerns and continuing loss of life in the conflict worried all.
It was a super set of debates and discussions - well done all for such excellent contributions!
