A really good resumption to our Debating and Interview Club post half term with our St Andrew's Group.
There was much to discuss with a budget, the forthcoming US Presidential election and Halloween / Guy Fawkes celebrations.
For our warm-up interview style question we looked at 'describing yourself in 3 words'.
We then turned to a vote on whether we should (i.e. the UK) have a say on US elections given the importance of the US and the US President to our economy and in military terms with NATO?
The group remained split at both tellings. Many felt we should have some form of proportional voice, whilst others disliked the sense or potential sense of electoral interference, and would we like such an idea in the UK?
With Tuition fees going up at University level, we asked whether University should be free at the point of use? Again the group remained relatively split. A much echoed argument centred on too many people going to university and a desire to see more emphasis on key skills for the economy.Â
On the budget, the group set forth their ideas for priorities:
The Environment and Climate Change led the way; with Schools and No VAT closely following, as well as Healthcare, helping the Homeless, tackling Poverty and investing in Technology.Â
Well done all!
