St. Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 10th June 2025

Our newsround and highlights of the week are outstanding in our sessions. This week we heard about studying for assessments, test results, family time, dance recitals and acting.

On current affairs topics included: the French Open, Trinidad defeating St Kitt’s and cricket Masters, the US coastguard seizing narcotics, a new hospital in Guyana, the Austrian school shooting, LA and Trump’s call for the National Guard and marines, and new AI and VIP features for Google and Chat GPT.

For skills we focussed on persuasive language and the group also completed a review of skills and key debating components quiz.

Our unseen took in an ‘on this day’ in history moment from 6 June 1944 and the D-Day Landings.

Debating motions took in the topics/questions:

·         Should all new homes have solar panels installed? Despite unanimous agreement on the need to act on the environment, the motion was rejected with 60% of the group opposing at both tellings.

·         Should all schools have residentials?

·         World Ocean Day – what steps would you take to help tackle plastic waste and so on?

·         Following the Musk-Trump split, we turned to the motion ‘This House would not have unelected members of the public joining governments’

Unusually for our sessions, apart from the discussions on Oceans, each motion or debating topic split the group, dividing opinion.

Well done all on another superb week!
