St Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 24th March 2026

This was a superb last session before the Spring break.

Our skill focus this week turned to POIs and Summary preparation.

Our newsround reflected on events in the Middle East and Cuba, conferences in Nigeria, the rise in fuel pricing and inflationary pressures across the globe, as well as the Northern Lights, football and other sporting news, and the Oscars.

Warm-up questions included:

·         ‘If you could replace homework, what would you replace it with, and why?’

·         ‘What are you most looking forward to with the forthcoming holidays?’

On homework, the group split between wider academic opportunities, from reading to language work, and extra-curricular pursuits, to those wishing for more time for relaxation.

It was wonderful to hear an array of different exciting options for the holidays – from family time, to food, extended reading, sports and games, to catching up with friends and travel overseas.

We then turned to the world's happiest countries (with Finland at the top for nearly a decade); and discussed why so many in the top 10 are Scandinavian? & whether this related to lifestyle or geography or culture.

Debating motions included:

·         ‘This House believes that aliens exist’

·         ‘Is it acceptable to have pineapple on a pizza?’

·         ‘Should Governments pay people to go green? (environmentally)’

Well done all for such excellent points throughout, whether on our space topic, with 89% believing in other life forms beyond earth (but not in a fictional alien sense), to an amusing but deeply thoughtful debate on food, and concluding with a focus on climate change and global warming.

Great work from all this term! Wishing everyone a super break and looking forward to catching up in April.
