St Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 4th November 2025

A great session with the group, not least with the focus on skills – from objectivity to conclusions.

Our warm-up questions asked:

‘Describe your favourite fictional character’ & ‘What would you like to be when you are older?’

It was super to hear an array of characters from the world of books, as well as fascinating career options, from scientists, to bakers, chefs, engineers, designers, teachers, doctors, astronauts and vets.

Our newsround took in the announcement of Sir David Beckham’s knighthood ceremony, the US Government shut down, tensions in Venezuela, Hurricane Melissa, and Halloween celebrations around the world.

Debating motions covered the topics/questions:

·         ‘This House believes that teachers should be paid more than doctors’

·         ‘Should trade be used as a way to make peace?’

As ever we voted before and after the set-piece debates.

The majority felt that doctors and healthcare should receive more funding, but it was quickly apparent how much of a ‘chicken & egg’ debate this motion encapsulated/covered. The second debate saw more even voting, with intriguing reference to Ancient Rome.

Very well done all!
