The Socratic Club - 13th April 2025

We had a super set of Junior and Senior Socratic debating sessions in the middle of the Easter break.

On skills we worked on persuasive language.

From tariffs to the earthquake in Myanmar, from the nationalisation of British steel to the War in Ukraine, and questions over the UK's position on Net Zero we covered an array of current affairs topics. We also looked at the King's royal tour of Italy and King Charles III's and Queen Camilla's wedding anniversary.

Dr Gross contributed to coverage with the Associated press: King Charles III, Queen Camilla celebrate 20th marriage anniversary | AP News

Our set-piece debates focussed on:

1. Whether junk food and sugary treats should be banned in schools &

2. The House believes that board games are better than video games

In both cases the groups divided, with some excellent extended proposition and opposition argumentation.

On the back of Alan Titchmarsh's comments, we also discussed whether the UK market for the avocado was damaging to the environment and whether households should change their habits/shopping to help the environment/climate.

Our unseen work took in the first recorded sale of a banana in England - all the way back to 10 April 1633!

Well done all!
