The Socratic Club - 6th July 2025

ree

Our final Socratic session of the term brought together a fantastic mix of current affairs, big questions, and thoughtful debate.

We started by reflecting on recent events and ideas — from public figures showing emotion, to the role of AI in judgement, and what really makes people happy or successful. These themes led us into our debates, which included:

· This House believes it is acceptable for public figures to show emotion in professional settings· This House believes it is better to be extremely hard-working than extremely talented· This House would prefer to be judged by AI than by a human· This House believes winning the lottery would make us truly happy

In each case, students split into proposition and opposition teams, shared their views clearly, and responded to others with confidence and respect.

What stood out was their ability to listen carefully and adapt their arguments to make them even stronger.

We also held voting rounds, giving everyone the chance to hear both sides and then decide where they stood — and whether anything had changed their mind.

We are delighted with the progress our members have made — and look forward to another set of lively and thoughtful sessions next term.

Well done to all who took part!
