The Socratic Club - 8th February 2026

Despite the misty/drizzly weather, our debating sessions sparkled!

Our skill focus this week turned to body language and the importance of the ‘smile’ as well as speaking with conviction.

Warm-up questions included:

·         ‘What does the word resilient mean?’

·         ‘Who do you admire from history?’

Churchill, Henry VIII, Marie Curie, Tolkien, Queen Victoria, Julia Caesar, Enid Blyton, William Wallace, Pelé, da Vinci, and Martin Luther King all featured with excellent justification.

Our newsround featured NASA’s plans for the Artemis II mission, the Winter Olympics, Six Nations, the protests in Iran and the potential action Trump may take.

Debating motions included:

·         ‘This House would ban mobile phones in school’;

·         ‘This House would make volunteering a compulsory part of education’; &

·         ‘This House believes that sport is more important than academic/classroom work’.

Each motion divided our groups with excellent proposition and opposition argumentation.

Great work from all!
