The Socratic Club - 9th February 2025

This was an excellent set of Socratic Junior and Senior club sessions.

We began by focussing on public speaking nerves and what to do if/should these arise, from breathing work to planning ahead. 

Our newsround took in: 

The first few weeks of Donald Trump's second term

Sporting news from around the world, including the Six Nations and Super Bowl 

AI and deciphering ancient scrolls

The Grammys 

Health Minister resignation 

Warm-up questions included a review of the most important meal in the day, and an unseen on the forthcoming anniversary of the release from prison of Nelson Mandela (11 February 1990).

Our debates discussed the motions/topics:

This House believes bottled water is better than tap water

Should contact sports be banned for school children?

If you could be famous when you are older, would you like to be?

Effort is more important than Grades?

Should we have more science in schools?

Unusually for our sessions voting followed a pattern in both Junior and Senior sessions, and it was super to see such impressive active listening, rebuttal and POIs throughout.
