The Socratic Club Private Guided Tour -The Charterhouse - 9 May 2026

Our private guided visit to The Charterhouse was a truly memorable Socratic Club experience. Time seemed to fly by as we immersed in the remarkable history and quiet atmosphere of the site. Tucked away in the heart of London, the Charterhouse carried such a sense of tranquillity that it genuinely felt as though we had stepped into another era entirely, despite the constant movement and energy of the city just beyond its walls.

Led by an expert guide, our members explored over 600 years of history, discovering the many layers of the Charterhouse’s past, from its origins as a medieval monastery to its later role as a Tudor mansion, school and almshouse. Along the way, we uncovered fascinating stories hidden within one of London’s most remarkable historic settings, not least the origins of many football rules and the location of preparation for Elizabeth I before her coronation in 1559!

As with all Socratic Club events, the experience extended well beyond a traditional tour. Following the visit, we explored questions such as whether old buildings are more important than modern ones, and whether places such as the Charterhouse remain a good use of space in a modern city. We also reflected on what we enjoyed most throughout the tour, although choosing a highlight proved difficult as every part was so engaging.

It was wonderful to see such genuine curiosity, thoughtful discussion and engagement throughout the session, as students explored many fascinating ideas inspired by the surroundings.

It was a truly superb visit, and we very much look forward to returning for future discussions and debates.
