This was a superb debating competition full of clearly argued points, with authenticity and conviction to the fore and excellent body language and active listening skills shown throughout. It was wonderful to bring together so many from so many different time zones to this occasion.
The motions:
· ‘This House would ban iPads and Screens from schools’ &
· ‘This House would choose to be famous’
Inspired by the actor Hugh Grant’s campaign to change screentime/use in education we tackled this important topic. The opposition narrowly won the day and voting also reflected this, with 67% against the motion. A battle of research skills, widening learning and opportunity was set against addiction, health, distraction and fears of AI. We saw outstanding use of signposting as well as examples. Well done all!
The second debate saw significant use of POIs and a growing confidence amongst all to challenge/provide rebuttal. Here power, wealth and influence fought against the risk of a lack of privacy and intrusion into conventional life. Again the opposition won the day, and in this case the margin moved from 58% at the first telling to 75% at the second. The judge was impressed with the nuance shown, the use of humour and sophisticated signposting.
We are delighted to report on our members achieving distinctions and merits for their respective grades. Very well done all!
