The Socratic Club was again delighted to combine with Nimble Minds for a debating session.
After a warm-up with an emphasis on why and widening vocabulary, we turned to our set-piece debate on the motion: 'This House would like to travel to Space'. The group split into proposition and opposition teams and each student presented a series of points either for or against the argument. Justification for the opinion/argument given was the key skill being tested and it was super to see the progress made during the session. We also looked at body language and how to present our points better.Â
Arguments ranged from the search for Planet B, wider knowledge and learning, to the risks involved and potential environmental damage to the atmosphere.Â
To end the session we reflected on the General Election and asked each speaker to list a top priority. This saw proposals for more sport, more mathematics, martial arts and a shorter working week.Â
Well done all on such an impressive session.Â
