It has been a delight to see the continued progress of the group this first half of term. On skills this week we focussed on rebuttal, linking this with active listening and the importance of speaking with conviction.
Our warm-up questions included:
· ‘What do you enjoy most at your current school?’
· ‘Do you play any musical instruments?’ (piano, drums, and recorder all featured)
· ‘If you could write a book, what would it be about and why?’ (personal reflections, biographies and thrillers were all mentioned)
Our newsround raised issues from US-Iran negotiations, to the Winter Olympics, 20/20 Cricket World Cup, and the announcement of a new national holiday for St Kitts.
Debating motions/questions included:
· ‘Do we value art correctly?’
· ‘This House would merge the summer and winter Olympics’
· ‘Should we still learn Latin and Ancient Greek?’
· ‘This House would ban cars in city centres’
Very well done all on nuanced and sophisticated responses across the session.
