St. Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 4th June

This week saw another excellent session at our SKI Debating & Public Speaking Club.

Our skill focus this week looked at Conclusions - how to end proposition and opposition arguments effectively as well as overall debates in an impressive manner.

Our newsround saw reference to the forthcoming anniversary of D-Day, the UK General Election, the Mexico Presidential election, Joe Biden's plans on immigration, the T20 cricket world cup and the India Election results.

For our warm up we then turned to our interview style philosophical question with an emphasis on 'why'/justification?:

'Should the voting age be lowered?'

The group voted unanimously in favour of lowering the voting age.

There was a feeling that in some instances a vote at 16/17 would align with driving and other responsibilities and encourage participation. It was also felt that children should be allowed to have a say on their futures, particularly on the topic of Global warming/Climate change. However, it was also noted that maturity, jobs and greater knowledge were important factors in voting. This was a very mature and impressive discussion.

Our main debates looked at the UK PM's Rishi Sunak's plan to reintroduce national service if he formed the next Government in the UK. We asked if such a plan would be something the group would like in St Kitt's?

Whilst the group rejected motion at both tellings, they liked the idea of service and community or volunteering work. Both sides had the opportunity to be both opposition and proposition to develop their argumentation skills.

In our final debate we also looked at the idea of a children's spaceport and whether this would be good for St Kitt's. Here the group split, with those in favour thinking about jobs and new technology, whilst those against arguing on cost grounds and enivronmental concerns.

Well done all on a superb session!
