The Socratic Club was again delighted to work with Nimble Minds on two debating & interview workshops.
We covered key debating skills, including active listening, strong opening statements and the use of justification with evidence/examples to help persuade an audience.
The groups worked very well together in teams and individually.
We were delighted with contributions throughout, questions, and the ability of students to think on their feet without preparation.
We covered inter alia four main debating topics/motions:
This House believes we should plant trees rather than build houses;
This House thinks our school holidays are too long; &
This House believes English is more important than Mathematics.
If you were Chancellor of the Exchequer what would you do and why?
In each case we took votes before and after, and mixed our teams-up in each instance and talked about a range of responses.
We also included a debating-vocabulary game working on persuasive language/literary devices.
On interview work we also looked at the question, ‘if you found a million pounds, what would you do and why?’
Thoughtful ideas emerged, from charitable concepts to racing cars and new buildings.
It was a super set of sessions - well done all!
