This was a great session and again a delight to welcome new members to the group.
On skills we focussed on summary speaking in addition to rebuttal.
Our warm-up questions asked:
‘Should astronomy be part of the curriculum?’ &
‘What is your best/favourite sport?’ (tennis, dance [included], basketball, swimming and cricket all featured)
Our newsround took in Space News, the T20 cricket world cup, the CARICOM conference hosted by St Kitts with Marco Rubio participating, and Trump’s State of the Union address.
The set-piece debating motions this week included:
· This House would ban parents from using phones when looking after children
· This House would have a completely ‘active’ school uniform, removing formality
The first motion was carried with the focus on a social media ban for parents when looking after children (with 71% in favour at the second telling).
In the second debate 86% of the group favoured a more active uniform, but retaining a formal option for formal occasions.
Well done all for such nuanced debating and argumentation!
