St Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 3rd March 2026

A super session with an extensive newsround and impressive discussion of key skills as well as implementation.

On skills we focussed on Ethos, Pathos and Logos.

Our warm-up questions asked:

  • ‘Is it better to be healthy or wealthy?’ &

  • ‘Should cookery be part of the day-to-day curriculum?’

In the first instance voting remained narrowly in favour of healthy (56% in favour); whilst cookery was carried unanimously at both tellings.

Our newsround took in the war in the Middle East, Trinidad & Tobago news, Gender pay gap, oil & gas, air travel implications for Dubai, Marco Rubio’s visit to St Kitts.

The set-piece debating motions this week included:

·         This House would follow one’s talent rather than one’s dreams

·         This House would be happy to travel in a driverless car

Each motion saw voting split with excellent argumentation throughout.

Very well done all!

Competition Highlights

Over the years, The Socratic Club has hosted a number of debating competitions, bringing together students from a range of schools across London, the UK, and abroad. Several of our competitions have taken place in inspiring and historically significant venues, including the Charles Dickens Museum, the Carlton Club, and the Imperial War Museum. These settings provide a memorable backdrop for thoughtful discussion and debate, encouraging students to engage with ideas in places closely connected to Britain’s intellectual and political heritage.
