After an initial newsround, our interview question this week asked students to think about the charity they would create and why. This encouraged pupils to continue to expand their answers whilst also showing some impressive creativity. We then looked at whether music should be mandatory within a school/classroom setting, and acknowledged that this was a similar question to those we have discussed in the past regarding sports and drama. However, interestingly, we had different results, with almost all saying they felt it should be compulsory.
Our first debate examined if we should celebrate both Halloween and Bonfire night, which created a few different responses, often depending upon if pupils had an American background or not, a topic which we then discussed further. Our skills focus this week looked at persuasive language and also summaries. The class focussed on two different arguments, whether we should allow archaeologists to disturb tombs (re Petra/Joran recent excavations) and also if it were ethical that Elon Musk is giving $1m per day to Pennsylvanian voters. All students were awarded points directly linking to whether they had been using persuasive language or summary techniques in their arguments.Â
Our final group discussion looked at whether large historical artefacts, such as dinosaur skeletons, should be put up for private sale, or if they should be on display for the public. Students engaged really well with this, and it was great to see them all happy to show their interest in a diverse number of topics throughout the session. Well done all!
