American School of London - 2nd October 2024

Dr George Gross

We had a really fantastic session this week, where students were keen to start our discussions by talking about the ongoing situation in the Middle East. We looked at the key issues that the different sides had and talked briefly about the history of the conflict. We then moved onto the topic of whether using phones whilst walking down the street should be made illegal. This is a debate that one student had read in The Week Junior and it sparked a few different opinions.

Our focus of the week was how to approach an unseen work, and students were presented with a painting by Caillebotte. All shared their thoughts on the image before answering the practice interview question of the week of “what do you find most challenging at school?”.

As a group we then discussed the recent topic of whether politicians should receive handouts, with many students coming up with great reasoning as to why the public would be angry about this.

The two main debates that we had as a class looked at the price of concert tickets and also whether traditions mattered. This created some heated discussions in the group with some really fantastic points and rebuttals (using our key skills of the week).

All students performed brilliantly this week, and it’s great to see each of them developing more confidence.
