As usual we started this week discussing the news, and as the Budget had been unveiled a few hours before, we spent some time discussing what had been announced. This included an in depth discussion around VAT for private schools, the raising of minimum wage and the rise in price on tobacco. We also further discussed the upcoming US election and the recent severe flooding in Spain.
We followed this by looking at the image of Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio, with students dissecting the work of art, suggesting different interpretations by looking at the colour, expression, light and composition of the work.
Our initial class discussion looked at whether other countries should have a say, or vote, in the US election, given its global influence. This created some interesting thoughts throughout the group, with considered thought given to foreign and domestic policies, in addition to relations with other countries.
Our skill of the week this week focussed on the style and tone of students’ presentations. All students first practiced this by saying what their favourite animal was, getting personal feedback. They then had to put this into practice during our main debate of the day, which discussed whether ChatGPT should be allowed to be used for all schoolwork. Some really great arguments were used here, with some students really showing improvement, clearly learning from previous weeks. This was a topic that really engaged all the students and it was great to see some fantastic POIs and rebuttals. Well done!
