With the result of the US election announced just a few hours before our session this week, we spent a considerable amount of time discussing the outcome. Students were lively in their conversation relating to this, and we also included explanation on how the electoral college system worked, what swing states were and how students felt the election had been. We also talked about the voting system and its pros and cons compared to a popularity vote.
The election became the main focus for our entire session, where students followed this by debating whether elections should be held every four years. It was impressive to see such objectivity throughout (our skill of the week).
Our second debate looked at whether we should have a President or remain as a monarchy, before finishing on a discussion as to whether universities should be free.
We had a smaller group this week, but it was fantastic to spend some considerable time discussing the election, with students who were clearly so passionate about the topic.
