Excellent sessions this week in our Kensington Wade groups. We focussed on POIs for our skill of the week and how best to use them within a debate discussion or competition.
Inspired by a recent poll of school children on whether they would travel to space in their lifetimes, we asked for our warm interview style philosophical question with an emphasis on 'why'?:
'Do you think you will ever travel to space & would you like to go?'
We also asked if children would like to explore the oceans too.
The majority voted overwhelmingly against space travel, not just to whether they would travel, but also as to whether they would like to travel to space. Cost, risk and the damage that such travel may cause to the planet all factored in the negative response. A few sought to argue for the need to discover a Planet B and wider space discovery/knowledge including satellite use as critical to our existence. It was a super discussion. More were keen on the idea of ocean discovery.
Our newsround saw reference to the Euros, Macron's calling of snap elections in France, the UK General election and the Olympics.
For our main debate, we asked whether the Liberal Democrat policy of two new national parks should be implemented - many liked the idea, but considerable concern was raised as to cost. It was asked somewhat rhetorically, why it should cost £50m a year for such a scheme? However, the opportunities for animals with biodiversity and recreation all appealed.
In our Senior group we also looked at the UK's Trident Nuclear weapons deterrent and asked whether this should be retained?
A majority voted to retain the weapons but many spoke for a desire to try and create a nuclear weapon free world. The war in Ukraine added weight to the need to retain a deterrent.
Well done all on such great sessions.
