Knightsbridge School Debating & Interview Club - 13th June

This week we focussed on POIs for our skill of the week and how best to use them within a debate discussion or competition.

Inspired by a recent poll of school children on whether they would travel to space in their lifetimes, we asked for our warm interview style philosophical/political question with an emphasis on 'why'?:

'Do you think you will ever travel to space & would you like to go?'

We also asked if children would like to explore the oceans too.

The majority voted overwhelmingly against, not just to whether they would travel, but also as to whether they would like to travel to space. Cost, risk and the damage that such travel may cause to the planet all factored in the negative response. A few sought to argue for the need to discover a Planet B and wider space discovery/knowledge including satellite use as critical to our existence. It was a super discussion.

Our newsround saw reference to the Euros, the election in India, Macron's calling of snap elections in France, the US election and Trump, the UK General election and the Olympics.

Our first motion looked at the UK's Trident Nuclear weapons deterrent and asked whether this should be retained?

A majority voted to retain the weapons (90% in favour), but all spoke for a desire to try and create a nuclear weapon free world. The war in Ukraine added weight to the need to retain a deterrent.

In our second motion we reviewed the Liberal Democrat policy of two new national parks and asked whether we would support this policy - many liked the idea, but considerable concern was raised as to cost. It was asked somewhat rhetorically, why it should cost £50m a year for such a scheme?

Well done all on a great session.
