St Andrew's School - 29th April

This was another superb session with our St Andrew's Debating & Public Speaking Club.

Our skill focus this week looked at Style and Tone and how to deliver a speech in a confident and persuasive way.

For our warm up we then turned to our interview style question with an emphasis on 'why'?:

If you could study abroad, where would you go/choose and why? France, the USA and American universities, Australia, China and Italy all featured - from academic benefits, cultural exchange to linguistic opportunities, we saw a superb set of responses.

Our newsround saw reference to the War in Ukraine, the return of the King to public duties, the ending of the Bute House agreement and resignation of the First Minister in Scotland, sporting results/fixtures, along with forthcoming local (and mayoral) elections in the UK.

We then turned to our debate on the back of legislation in the USA to ban TikTok. The motion: 'This House would ban TikTok'.

The group voted overwhelmingly against a ban at the first telling but this moved somewhat by the second telling.

Splitting into teams, this was a hard fought debate with very good use of stories and evidence to support each argument and an emphasis on the financial implications and practicality of enforcing a ban and what that would mean for the wider tech industry. Equally, many pointed out the problems of social media for children and the impact on attention spans with some limited/short content.

Well done all!
