St Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 23rd September 2025

This was a very impressive session and again super to see some new faces joining the group – and our longstanding members making such tremendous contributions.

For those new members we covered a brief introduction to debating and key body language skills and evidence to support argumentation.

Our skill of the week turned to POIs – and how best to use/implement interjections within a debating setting.

Our warm-up questions asked

‘If you could live in another country, where would you pick and why?’ &

‘Is the mind the same as the brain?’

On living in another country we had a diverse range of options given, from South Korea, to Japan, Italy, the USA, Canada, Thailand and the UK.

Our newsround took in Trump’s UN appearance and latest announcements, a NASA moon mission, FIFA World Cup 2026 and Freedom Day / National Heroes Day in St Kitts.

Debating motions covered the topics/questions:

·         ‘This House would ban school uniform’

·         ‘This House believes children should do chores at home’

As ever we voted before and after the set-piece debates.

School uniform had the group divided 50/50 at both tellings; whilst, the motion was carried in the case of chores at home for children – ‘life skills’ being a key point.

A great session – very well done all!

Competition Highlights

Over the years, The Socratic Club has hosted a number of debating competitions, bringing together students from a range of schools across London, the UK, and abroad. Several of our competitions have taken place in inspiring and historically significant venues, including the Charles Dickens Museum, the Carlton Club, and the Imperial War Museum. These settings provide a memorable backdrop for thoughtful discussion and debate, encouraging students to engage with ideas in places closely connected to Britain’s intellectual and political heritage.
