This was a great session post our mid-Semester break with our SKI Academy Debating Club.
There was much to discuss on the day of the US Presidential election itself and Guy Fawkes celebrations.
Our skills of the week looked at Style and Tone and Objectivity.
For our warm-up interview style questions we looked at how 'your friends would describe you in 3 words'.
This saw an excellent range of vocabulary and justification.
& 'What do you most like about your current school?' This included: the teachers, events, activities, and resources.
We then turned to a vote on whether we should (i.e. SKI and the UK) have a say on US elections given the importance of the US and the US President to our economy and in military/security terms?
The group remained split at both tellings. Many felt we should have some form of proportional voice, whilst others disliked the sense or potential sense of electoral interference, and would we like such an idea in our own country?
We also asked whether the Electoral College system should be retained? or whether the Popular vote should decide a Presidential election? The group again remained split.
Our newsround took in:
Fireworks/explosions/accident in St Kitt's; the Floods in Spain; strained relations between India and Canada; and Halloween events.
We ended with a debate centred on whether it is better to plant trees or build houses?
The majority narrowly voted for Trees - on the basis of being good for the planet/environment.
Well done all on a great session!
