St. Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 8th October 2024

Another very impressive session, full of questions, discussion and debate.

This week we turned to the key skill of Summary speaking and continued our work on unseens - with the example of a painting of Sir Isaac Newton. It was super to see the group explore the work and in turn uncover the story.

Our questions and debates included:

  • Should we always tell the truth?

  • What makes a good leader? - from inspiration to leading by example, from fairness to decisiveness, from debating and public speaking skills to personality and confidence, we explored an array of potential qualities.

  • The Motion: 'Is Sport more important than Academic Subjects?'

  • Who(m) should have ownership of the San José? (the so-called Holy Grail of shipwrecks)

Our newsround took in:

  • Twitter and a potential ban

  • Hurricane Milton

  • MI5s warning on Russia and Iran threats to the UK (and world more generally)

  • Resignation of the Deputy Mayor of New York

  • Kamala Harris interview

  • Icon of the Seas & St Kitt's

The group rejected the motion on telling the truth (by 100%), on the basis that this needed to be significantly more nuanced, from not causing offense in certain situations to surprise birthday parties, to the world of espionage. It was equally pointed out that integrity mattered for reputations, so circumstance/context would be the key in any particular situation.

The group also voted overwhelmingly for academia over sport, however, an option of balance won the day at the second telling. Some very interesting points on jobs and mental health (healthy mind and body) worked on both sides in the debate.

Very well done all.
