Another very good session and great to see some new faces joining the group.
In addition to an introduction to debating and key body language skills and evidence to support argumentation, we turned to list styles/formats to provide structure to both proposition and opposition contributions.
Our warm-up question asked:
“On holiday what one item would you have kept / or taken home?”
Our newsround was wonderfully impressive taking in a diverse range of topics from across the globe, including:
The presidency in Guyana, the PM of Jamaica, Venezuela – US conflict, the Israeli strike in Qatar, violence with the Nepalese Parliament, a new PM for France and problems for Macron, Hurricane Gabriel and Donald Trump’s tariffs to be tested in the Supreme Court.
Debating motions took in the topics/questions:
· Is it ok to make mistakes in Public life/Politics? – an excellent lines from the group included ‘it is human to err’ / while others saw the role model scenario as critical
· ‘This House would want to be famous’ – saw a battle between the type of fame and a lack of privacy
· Is the age of essay writing over?
- Here the motion was rejected at the second telling 67% to 33%.
As ever we voted before and after the set-piece debates.
Well done all for such balanced argumentation. A very impressive session!
