Our St Philip's debating and interview group have been making tremendous progress this term.
Proposition arguments have been growing in detail as well as responses/rebuttal and some sophisticated POIs too.
This week we turned to the key skill of Summary speaking.
Our questions and debates included:
Should we always tell the truth?
What makes a good leader? - from inspiration to leading by example, from fairness to decisiveness, we explored an array of potential qualities.
The Motion: 'This House believes that the end of coal power is a good thing and we are prepared to pay more to be greener'
Our newsround took in:
The War in Ukraine
The widening conflict in the Middle East
Hurricane developments for Florida
The Conservative Leadership election
The US Presidential election
The group divided on spending more (if we needed to) to be greener; some argued we needed to set an example to the world on coal power, whilst others felt that the cost of living and the loss of winter fuel payments for pensioners meant that this was not the time for yet higher energy bills. By the second telling voting had moved 60% against spending more on green energy.
The group rejected the motion on telling the truth, on the basis that this needed to be significantly more nuanced, from not causing offense in certain situations to surprise birthday parties. It was equally pointed out that integrity mattered in building one's character and thus circumstance/context would be the key in any particular situation.
Well done all.
