The Socratic Club Coronation Special - 30th April

Hristina Ivanova

It was great to catch up with Socratic members as we discussed the Coronation of Charles III and the history behind the event.

From Anglo-Saxon to Norman traditions and then through the prism of Plantagenet, Tudor, Stuart, Orange, Hanoverian and Windsor dynasties we looked at how the ceremony has evolved, taking into account religious, political and economic changes to the UK. We also assessed the symbolism of various items of the regalia and St Edward's Chair.

Questions were of a very high standard throughout - well done all.

This was especially impressive given the review of Coronations included a wider reflection on the Constitutional developments of the British Isles.

We hope you had a great Coronation Bank Holiday Weekend!
