WCCS Michaelmas Term Review

We are delighted to report on an excellent first half to the Michaelmas term of Debating & Interview clubs at WCCS.

We have covered key skills from:

  • Body language

  • Presentation work

  • Conviction speaking

  • Classic interview questions (from core/subject specific to philosophical)

  • Active Listening

  • Conclusions & Summaries

  • Unseen work

  • Source Analysis of Paintings

  • Group debating/questions

  • Teamwork

  • Evidence & Stories

  • Rhetorical Questions

It has been great to see how the different groups have taken on these skills and applied them to their answers and arguments. In terms of debates, we have scrutinized, reviewed and assessed challenging current affairs topics, including inter alia:

  • Rising interest rates

  • The War in Ukraine

  • Climate Change

  • A ban on single-use plastic

  • HS2

  • Waste from Fast Fashion

  • XL Bully Dogs ban

  • The G20 in India

  • Natural disasters (in Morocco and Libya)

In addition, we have reviewed paintings (from Van Dyck to Velázquez) and covered philosophical subjects such as:

  • What makes a great leader?

  • How important is sport in education and in life?

  • Are the arts as important as the sciences?

  • What can be done to help the planet? (At home and at school)

  • Is technology a help or a hindrance?

The progress across the field has been very encouraging indeed and we are much looking forward to the second half of term.

Well done all!
